A total of three juries are involved in the IKARUS Prize. From the beginning of May to the end of April of the following year, the nomination jury visits all of the premieres of the Berlin children's and youth Theatres of the Besucher:innenförderung and nominates outstanding productions for children and young people for the IKARUS. The award jury and the youth jury independently select the IKARUS award winners independently of each other. All juries are diverse and after a maximum of 3 years the years, the jury places are reassigned.
The participation and voice of children and young people is an important concern for the JugendKulturService. Therefore, in 2018 the IKARUS was expanded to include a youth jury, which evaluates the productions nominated by the the productions nominated by the selection jury, and awards its own youth IKARUS awarded. A jury, closer to the target group and with their perspective equipped.
The Youth-IKARUS is just as highly endowed as the prize of the and therefore financially equal to it.

Even though the Theatres were mostly closed in 2020 and contact restrictions severely hampered the work of the youth jury, it was a matter of the heart of two members of the youth jury to deal extensively with the IKARUS and Berlin's children's and youth Theatres.
Mia Milena Behrens and Luisa Lieb spent many hours developing the concept for an IKARUS podcast in which the Theatres nominated for the IKARUS 2020 were asked about their connection to Theatre. What does Theatre mean to them, what rituals are there before a performance, what do they love about their profession and how do they deal with stage fright?
The former managing director of the JugendKulturService and co-initiator of the IKARUS Doris Weber Seifert and the new managing director Kathrin Völker-Krause also have their say. How did the IKARUS come about, what was it intended to achieve and how do they see the future of this award?
Of course, the topic of Corona and how Theatres deal with it is also a topic. What does the pandemic mean for Theatres and their work? Does it perhaps even change the Theatre itself?
The result is a timeless, very affectionate and profound insight into the children's and youth Theatre scene in Berlin, which above all shows the heart and soul of those involved, with which they practice their profession.
The podcast shows the power and creativity that the work of the youth jury can unleash. From concept to implementation to completion, the podcast was designed entirely by Mia Milena Behrens and Luisa Lieb.
